The possibility to choose the best solutions from multiple brands all from one hand – for indoor and outdoor.

Zumtobel Group brands Thorn, Zumtobel and acdc Lighting have created the perfect lighting solution for Largs Campus, part of North Ayrshire Council’s biggest ever capital investment programme. Working in partnership with Ramboll Glasgow and Castle Building Services on a project designed by LDC, the ZG companies have produced a lighting scheme that has helped to deliver a sustainable learning centre for the entire community, within and outside school hours, incorporating the most energy efficient and sustainable technology available.

The state-of-the-art £52 million education facility has been built on the grounds of part of the Sport Scotland Inverclyde National Centre, allowing the 2000 pupils accommodated in the new development access to state-of-the-art sporting facilities. The new high tech facility also incorporates Brisbane, Kelburn and St Mary’s primary schools and is a vibrant learning environment for 1,200 secondary and 820 primary pupils with 100 early years’ places.

Zumtobel’s ONDARIA circular pendants provide uniform illumination for the atrium areas, with their concave opal diffuser that curves slightly inwards for a soft lit effect. Thorn’s IQ Wave, a smart recessed LED IP44 rated luminaire, together with, Omega PRO LED recessed luminaires have been installed in the practical classrooms. IQ Wave incorporates a MV-Tech light optic and a highly reflective back that creates a smooth, homogenous illuminance with no visible LED and low glare (UGR 19, <3 000 CD/m2 at 65°). The slim profile, 600 x 600 Omega PRO LED recessed luminaires also provide excellent glare control (UGR<19/) and reduced maintenance.

Zumtobel’s IP65 rated CRAFT compact LED high bay luminaires with a wide beam optic for uniform (UGR 80 (4000 K), Ra > 70 (6500 K), have been installed in the sports halls. Thorn’s Chalice was the obvious choice for corridors, providing the an even distribution of illumination, combining low energy with high style. Novaline, a slim circular luminaire for wall or ceiling mounting has been installed in the stairwells, whilst IP65 rated Duoproof LED, with their high ingress protection, have been installed in the kitchen area. Thorn’s Equaline Linear LED luminaires have been incorporated in the dining area to provide excellent light output, >80lm/W efficacy and excellent glare control.

Thorn’s PopPack LED fittings, that can achieve energy savings of up to 67% when compared to traditional switch start, have been installed in conjunction with Aquaforce in the stores. Surface Aquaforce IP65 LED luminaires provide the required lighting levels via low energy lighting in this rugged environment. Voyager LED ultra slim exit signs have been installed throughout due to their suitability for small area use and viewing distances up to 23 metres. In the practical classrooms and kitchen spaces, where high risk emergency lighting was required, Zumtobel eBox central battery units were installed and commissioned by Zumtobel Group Services and integrate a 3rd party controls solution.

Other luminaires specified on this project include Thorn R2L2 and Areaflood Pro for the illumination of the external car park. Cetus LED, a recessed LED downlight sealed to IP44 in the toilets, Zumtobel Comsign and Puresign emergency exit signs over the doors with emergency monitoring.

The modern educational facilities and close working partnership between each school will benefit pupils at each transitional stage from early years to primary to secondary and allow younger pupils access to resources normally restricted to secondary pupils. The campus will ensure that pupils have every opportunity to attain, achieve and develop the skills necessary to live positive and fulfilling lives by accessing top quality sporting facilities.
