Summary: Lighting the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB) is the longest sea bridge in the world, spanning 30 km and significantly reducing travel time between Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao. The project faced unique challenges, such as frequent typhoons, height restrictions due to airports, and maritime traffic, all while maintaining high standards for safety, energy efficiency, and durability in extreme conditions. Thorn Lighting was selected to provide the lighting solution for the two artificial islands and the 1 km tunnel, ensuring optimal illumination and performance for the infrastructure.

Focus on the Lighting Solution

Thorn Lighting was tasked with illuminating the key infrastructure components of the HZMB, specifically the artificial islands and tunnel areas, using energy-efficient, robust lighting solutions. The lighting needed to perform under challenging environmental conditions while also ensuring the safety of both road users and maritime traffic. The solution had to meet stringent technical requirements, including high light output, low maintenance, and long lifespan, contributing to the overall sustainability and efficiency of the project.

Focus on the Products Used and Their Benefits

Thorn provided Champion Pro LED 132 floodlights, known for their high power (600W output), long lifespan (70,000 hours), and energy efficiency (115 lm/W), ideal for the artificial islands. These floodlights also have IP66 protection, making them resistant to salt and harsh weather. For the tunnel areas, Thorn deployed GTLED Entry and GT58 luminaires with DALI drivers, providing excellent uniformity, long life, and energy efficiency, essential for both visibility and safety. These solutions not only enhance the infrastructure's operational efficiency but also reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.

It was vital that we find the right partner for this large-scale and prestigious project. We had stringent technical demands and a challenging environment to deal with, and Thorn Lighting has done an exceptional job in meeting those needs with their reliable and efficient lighting solutions.
