Swimming Pool Lighting
SPORTS LIGHTING
GOING THE FULL LENGTH
Swimming enhances strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, with pools worldwide supporting both competitive and recreational use. High-profile events like synchronised swimming and diving, featured in the Olympics and global championships, underscore the sport's significance. However, lighting these pools presents challenges, including managing humidity, temperatures, and light control. At Thorn Lighting, with nearly a century of experience, we provide expert solutions to ensure safety, energy efficiency, and effective maintenance for both indoor and outdoor pools.
Key Design Considerations
LIGHTING CRITERIA
Effective swimming pool lighting must ensure appropriate horizontal and vertical illuminance with uniform coverage across the pool and surrounding walkways. It should also provide excellent glare control to enhance swimmers' focus, spectators' comfort, and lifeguards' ability to monitor the area effectively. For general indoor pools, a colour temperature of 4000 K is suitable, while recreational pools benefit from 3000 K, and TV broadcasting requires 5700 K. Additionally, the Colour Rendering Index (CRI) should be higher than Ra 80 to ensure accurate colour representation.
TV BROADCASTING
Where required, HD TV requires high TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) and a very low flicker factor to enable a high rate of frames per second (FPS) to enable super slow motion ‘freeze frames’ to be taken.
ENERGY, MAINTENANCE AND REFURBISHMENT
To optimise energy efficiency and reduce costs, incorporating controls such as switching or dimming for varying light levels is essential. Lighting products should be durable, able to withstand extreme weather conditions with high IP and IK ratings. Upgrading from HID to LED technology not only cuts energy consumption but also eliminates the lengthy warm-up time associated with HID lamps. Point-for-point LED refurbishment allows for maintaining existing mounting infrastructure while ensuring lower weight. Additionally, Thorn provides Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to confirm that our solutions meet traceable and measurable sustainability standards.
LED Technology in Sports Floodlighting
Whether it’s a recreational sports hall or a world-class stadium, there are number of factors to consider in order to understand the project requirements and get the lighting scheme right. The LED Technology in Sports Floodlighting whitepaper explores the key considerations for floodlighting for sports applications, giving you a guide to luminaire construction, understanding LED colour properties, taking site measurements, commissioning and more.
