Project Overview: Lighting the Streets in Darlington
The case study focuses on Darlington Borough Council's street lighting refurbishment project, which aimed to replace outdated SON lamps with energy-efficient LED solutions. The primary objectives were to enhance energy efficiency, reduce CO₂ emissions, and minimize ongoing maintenance costs. The project was implemented in phases, targeting major roads first and then extending to residential areas. Thorn Lighting’s CiviTEQ LED lanterns were selected for their performance and adaptability to meet the project’s needs.
Thorn Lighting provided the CiviTEQ LED lanterns, which were chosen for their superior efficacy, precise light distribution, and compatibility with existing infrastructure. These lanterns feature an R-PEC® optic, offering "wide street" illumination, making them suitable for both residential and major roads. Their compact and lightweight design allowed for easy installation, while the Bi-Power Switch feature enabled on-site dimming, providing flexibility and further energy savings.
Focus on the Products Used and Their Benefits
The CiviTEQ LED lanterns are available in two sizes, incorporating 12-72 LEDs, which allows for tailored solutions based on specific lighting needs. Their 12 precise lighting distributions ensure optimal illumination with minimal light spill. The lanterns also feature reduced wind resistance due to their streamlined design. Additionally, the CiviTEQ LED lanterns are low-maintenance, contributing to long-term cost savings for Darlington Borough Council, while also enhancing energy efficiency.
The Thorn CiviTEQ LED lantern was chosen due to its efficiency, photometric performance, low maintenance requirements, and ease of installation
