A Future-Proof Lighting Solution for Germany’s Largest Stadium

Borussia Dortmund needed to upgrade the outdated floodlight system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK to comply with new German Bundesliga (DFL) and UEFA broadcast standards ahead of EURO 2024. The club sought a future-proof LED solution that would not only enhance energy efficiency and control but also allow for future integration of lighting effects. The challenge was to deliver a system that met the stringent 1,600 lux DFL requirement while maintaining the stadium’s iconic atmosphere for over 81,000 spectators.

High-Performance LED Floodlights for Exceptional Visibility

Thorn Lighting provided a custom lighting solution featuring 252 high-powered Altis LED floodlights, replacing the analogue system under the stadium roof. The new setup delivers 2,100 lux towards the cameras, exceeding both DFL and UEFA requirements. The flicker-free lighting, with a TLCI of over 80, ensures optimal HDTV broadcast quality, enabling seamless super slow-motion replays. The system is controlled via an IP-based DMX interface, allowing real-time adjustments and stepped dimming for maximum flexibility.

Advanced Technology for Long-Term Efficiency and Customization

The modular Altis floodlights offer brilliant color reproduction, uniform illumination, and easy adaptability for various event scenarios. The LED system not only meets today’s stringent standards but also provides the groundwork for future enhancements, such as integrated laser technology for dynamic light shows. With this upgrade, Borussia Dortmund has invested in cutting-edge stadium lighting that enhances both player performance and fan experience while setting a new benchmark for energy-efficient sports illumination.
