Enhancing Healthcare Spaces with Energy-Efficient Lighting

The Greenock Health and Care Centre is a state-of-the-art 5,800m² facility designed to integrate health and social care services. As part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s sustainability initiatives, the project aimed to reduce CO₂ emissions while creating a comfortable, well-lit environment for patients and staff. Thorn and Zumtobel partnered with Wallace Whittle to deliver an advanced lighting system that aligns with BREEAM ‘Very Good’ sustainability standards and supports modern healthcare needs.

Innovative Lighting Solutions for Comfort & Functionality

Thorn Lighting developed a comprehensive, low-glare LED lighting scheme with full lighting controls to optimize energy use. IQ Wave fixtures were installed in consultation and treatment rooms to provide balanced illumination with minimal glare. Corridors and circulation areas feature Omega Pro 2 and Zumtobel’s PANOS infinity, ensuring a bright, inviting atmosphere. High-ceiling atriums benefit from ONDARIA pendant lights, which include a raise/lower winch system for easy maintenance.

Sustainable & Infection-Controlled Lighting Benefits

More than just energy efficiency, the lighting system also prioritizes hygiene and safety. IP65-rated Katona wall luminaires provide durable, dust-resistant illumination in stairwells, while Voyager Star emergency lighting ensures compliance with safety standards. Zumtobel’s LITENET lighting controls maximize daylight usage, further reducing energy consumption. This project has earned an EPC ‘B’ rating and a Scottish Design Award, showcasing how intelligent lighting solutions enhance healthcare environments while meeting sustainability goals.

"Energy efficiency is at the core of our design ideals, and the consistent support from the Zumtobel Group really helped drive a highly efficient lighting and control scheme. Their product quality and service were exemplary throughout the project."
