Project Overview and Goals

Avtrade, a global specialist in aircraft component services, established a new sustainable headquarters in rural Sussex, UK. The site includes modern office facilities and a large warehouse, all built on the grounds of a former egg farm. A key goal of the project was to create an environmentally responsible, energy-efficient workplace while staying within budget. In addition, strict planning regulations demanded advanced control of light pollution due to the rural setting. The lighting needed to support functionality across diverse areas—offices, corridors, warehouse, and outdoor spaces—while ensuring low maintenance and long-term cost savings.

Strategy and Implementation

Thorn Lighting delivered a comprehensive lighting solution for both interior and exterior spaces, providing tailored illumination to match the specific needs of each zone. Energy-efficient LED systems were installed to reduce power consumption, support sustainability goals, and meet environmental compliance. Special attention was given to avoiding light spill in the outdoor areas by performing detailed calculations to reassure local planning authorities. The result is a well-lit, high-performance workplace that aligns with both visual comfort and environmental responsibility.

Products Used and Their Benefits

  • Specline recessed LED luminaires were used in the offices, ensuring bright, uniform lighting with low energy consumption.
  • 132 Chalice downlights were installed in corridors and the reception area, offering a long 50,000-hour lifetime to minimize maintenance.
  • Hi-Rack fluorescent luminaires were chosen for the warehouse due to their sensor compatibility and dimming capability, reducing power consumption to as low as 10%.
  • 40 Piazza wall-mounted exterior luminaires were used for car park and road lighting, delivering wide distribution with cut-off optics to eliminate glare and light pollution.
