Transforming Energy Efficiency Across Selco Branches
Selco Builders Warehouse, a leading UK builders’ merchant with 66 branches, set out to enhance energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact. With stores operating for over 250,000 hours annually, the company needed an advanced lighting solution to lower energy consumption while improving the in-store experience for customers and employees. The ambitious LED lighting upgrade, developed in collaboration with Thorn Lighting, aimed to create a well-lit, sustainable retail environment.
Thorn Lighting introduced a sensor-controlled LED system, integrating HiPak Pro, Aquaforce, Julie, and Omega luminaires. This technology dynamically adjusts light levels based on natural daylight, increasing efficiency by 10-15%. The transition to LED lighting has significantly reduced energy waste and carbon emissions, ensuring consistent and optimal illumination while lowering operational costs.
Sustainability & Business Impact
The environmental and financial benefits of the upgrade are substantial. Each Selco store saves nearly 69 tonnes of carbon annually—equivalent to planting 200,000 trees across all locations. Smart meters have helped track energy reductions, with some branches cutting electricity costs by up to £30,000 per year. CEO Howard Luft highlighted the transformation: “The new LED lighting has created a brighter environment, improving both the shopping experience and workplace efficiency while delivering impressive energy and cost savings.”
