Göppingen Leads the Way with Energy-Efficient LED Street Lighting
The city of Göppingen in Germany is embracing a greener future by systematically replacing outdated street lighting with efficient LED solutions. With support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the local government set out to reduce CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, and light pollution. Special attention was given to ensuring that outdoor lighting, especially in areas outside the city, would meet strict environmental standards and reduce disruption to wildlife. This initiative also extended to multifunctional public spaces such as the “Ort der Vielfalt” leisure complex, further showcasing Göppingen’s holistic commitment to sustainability.
Smart Urban Lighting Enhances Safety and Saves Energy
To achieve precise, environmentally responsible lighting, Göppingen deployed a smart combination of Thorn LED luminaires, including intelligent control systems for optimized energy usage. The integration of lighting management systems allows for adaptable settings such as half-night switching, further improving efficiency. In the “Ort der Vielfalt,” lighting design was tailored to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for diverse users—from skateboarders and climbers to families and senior citizens—proving that well-planned lighting can support both function and community well-being.
Powerful LED Products Deliver Long-Term Savings and Style
Thorn’s R2L2 and CiviTEQ luminaires illuminate roads and pedestrian areas with precision optics and minimal maintenance. Meanwhile, the Urba Deco range was used for the leisure complex, delivering glare-free, stylish light distribution that enhances the modern architecture of the site. Thanks to these products, the town has already saved 450,000 kWh annually, reduced CO₂ emissions by 266 tons, and achieved a return on investment within just 3.5 years.
"With just 700 LED luminaires, we’re saving 450,000 kWh of energy annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by 266 tons – the system will pay for itself in just three and a half years."
