Revolutionizing Tunnel Lighting with LED Technology

The Eurasia Tunnel in Istanbul, the only tunnel in the world connecting two continents, required a state-of-the-art lighting solution to enhance visibility, energy efficiency, and durability. Initially planned for HID lighting, the project shifted to an advanced LED system to optimize performance, reduce energy consumption, and ensure long-term cost-effectiveness. Given the tunnel’s low ceiling height and demanding operational conditions, the lighting solution had to provide exceptional uniformity, minimal glare, and easy maintenance.

GTLED PRO – The Ultimate Tunnel Lighting Solution

GTLED PRO was developed with safety, durability, and efficiency in mind. Featuring IP66 protection, the luminaire withstands harsh tunnel environments and operates efficiently in temperatures up to 50°C. Its advanced optics and lens configurations minimize disability glare while maintaining excellent uniformity. With a lifespan exceeding 100,000 hours and minimal maintenance requirements, GTLED PRO guarantees long-term reliability. This project showcases Thorn’s expertise in tunnel lighting, with installations already expanding to tunnels across Europe, including Norway and Austria.

The station is illuminated with bright lights, and traffic lanes are equipped with electronic signage, including green arrows and red "X" indicators to manage the flow of vehicles. The sleek architectural style adds a contemporary touch to the functional infrastructure.

Tailored LED Solution for Maximum Efficiency

Thorn, in partnership with Kitoko, delivered a customised LED lighting system designed specifically for the tunnel’s structure and operational requirements. The GTLED PRO luminaire was selected and modified to ensure optimal light distribution and enhanced driver visibility. The solution allowed for significantly wider spacing between luminaires - 9 meters compared to competitors, resulting in lower installation costs, reduced maintenance, and better overall performance. The DALI-enabled control system dynamically adjusts brightness levels based on external lighting conditions, ensuring a seamless driving experience while maximising energy savings.

“The choice of manufacturer was made based on Thorn’s advanced technology and high-performance products. Because of the demanding security and performance criteria, Thorn developed a special lighting fixture for this tunnel, certified by independent international institutions.”
