LightLinks: Developments and competition updates

The LightLinks II project between Glasgow (UK) and Amathole (South Africa) is making excellent progress and has reached the final design phase.  The new city hall scheme is set reduce energy consumption from 2.4 to 1.4kW, as well as providing a better environment for users. As the second project approaches completion, the final applications for LightLinks III have been submitted. Cities are invited to send in their lighting cooperation project proposals, taking the following issues into account: concrete benefits for the local population; sharing and transfer of knowledge between two cities; sustainability and respect for the environment; and long-term viability.

The entries will be judged by a panel of representatives from Thorn, LUCI and CLSF, along with lighting experts from cities that have been involved in international lighting co-operation projects.

The selected project partnership will benefit from lighting equipment and project support services from Thorn up to a value of €20 000, lighting design expertise from CLSF, coordination and support for on-site visits from LUCI, as well as international communication and promotion from Thorn and LUCI.

LightLinks is a sponsorship initiative set up by Thorn and the Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI) network to develop and support local government cooperation for sustainable urban lighting projects. The project is based on a partnership between two cities: the beneficiary city, in a developing country and the partner city, from a more developed country. Together they draw up a lighting program for the beneficiary city aiming for long term social and economic improvements.

Launched in 2007, the two LightLinks projects to date include Lyon (France)/Jericho (Palestine), completed and inaugurated in May 2011, and Glasgow (UK)/Amathole (South Africa).
