As part of its commitment to meet the EU’s target to increase energy efficiency by 20 per cent by 2020, Landskrona Municipality has opened what it claims is the most energy efficient school in Sweden, Emilia School in Häljarp.

International Children's Games, Lanarkshire
In August of this year the 45th International Children's Games was hosted jointly by North and South Lanarkshire Councils. This was the first time that the world's biggest youth sporting event had been hosted in Scotland. A total of 1,300 competitors and coaches representing 77 cities from 33 countries worldwide had a great time competing and making lots of new friends during their stay in Lanarkshire for the International Olympic Committee-recognised 3 day event.

Thorn moves UK headquarters to Spennymoor, County Durham
12 October 2010 Thorn Lighting today announced proposals to relocate its UK headquarters from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire to the award winning Thorn plant in Spennymoor, County Durham, which houses 500 staff. The move is designed to improve service levels for Thorn's customers and sales force alike.

Thorn Academy of Light, Spennymoor celebrates its first birthday
The Thorn Academy of Light (TAL) in Spennymoor has just celebrated its first birthday since opening in February 2009. Built at the front of Thorn’s factory the Competence Sharing Centre has a floor space of 3,000 sq m on two levels. Up to 100 people can experience lighting techniques in practise, view exhibitions and attend training courses.

Indeed Danish building regulations (Bygningsreglementet) require a reduction in consumption of 10 and 20% from 2006 levels by 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Goodbye Switch Start, Hello High Frequency
1 September 2009 | Roadshow dates Thorn is today launching a major energy saving campaign, urging small and medium electrical contractors to change from installing glow-starter switch (magnetic) driven fluorescent fittings to high frequency (HF) electronic versions, which consume about 20% less power and hence reduce CO2 emissions.
Spennymoor attains ISO 14001 certification
As part of its commitment to sustainable development, Thorn has another production plant certified in accordance with the environmental management standard ISO 14001. The environmental audit at the lighting brand’s largest luminaire production facility - at its home base in Spennymoor, northeast England - was successfully completed during the summer of 2009.

Energy-Efficiency MEP visits Thorn
Lib Dem MEP for the North East, Fiona Hall, an energy efficiency specialist on the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee, visited Thorn's Spennymoor plant on Monday 18 May 2009, to hear about their continued commitment to both developing energy saving light fittings and also educating the professional market on the benefits of energy saving products, in the company’s drive to take the least efficient energy using light fittings off the market.

Thorn's Gateshead scheme wins prestigious energy saving award
Thorn is celebrating after winning the most prestigious category in the 2009 EMILAS awards. The ‘Energy Management and Innovation in Lighting Award Scheme’, reinstated by the Lighting Industry Federation after an absence of 18 years, are recognised as the premier energy-efficiency awards for the UK lighting industry. The winning schemes were announced on 19th May at the Federations’ AGM in London.

Green Scheme Stops Lighting Going To Landfill
