Town roundabout gets a lighting face-lift

An imaginative street lighting refurbishment by the Torfaen County Borough Council is creating a safer environment at night as well as being aesthetically pleasing during the day… and will pay for itself in 3 years. The Borough has replaced eight ageing columns and lanterns in Cumbran with Thorn's style conscious City Vision range. Keen to promote a vibrant, modern new look the Council has chosen special lighting columns with flat glass Triumph lanterns employing 250W high pressure sodium lamps.

By night the lanterns, which meet the requirements of the new European lighting code EN13201, provide excellent lighting levels with good uniformity and restriction of glare. By daytime, the distinctive column structures give strong guidance in defining the traffic route. The daytime differentiation is further helped by the bracket arms with their strong linear style and it was important to paint the whole scheme blue to match the Borough's colour scheme.

Both residents and visitors have reacted favorably to the new lighting.

Seeking to achieve a fully integrated lighting design strategy for their towns local authorities have been looking for a combination of lanterns, columns and harmonised brackets that are functional, yet aesthetically suitable and sympathetic to the environment. With the advent of the City Vision range, they now have this ability.

The scheme was designed by Torfaen C.B.C’s Street Lighting Department and was installed by SEC.
