Northern Rock

Northern Rock bank on Thorn

Like all High Street banks, Northern Rock is concerned with saving energy as far as possible without reducing the quality of its facilities. Ian McDine  the Energy Analyst of the Facilities Management team heard about the potential energy and maintenance savings he could achieve using LEDs in place of an existing compact fluorescent installation , and invited Thorn’s Project Specification Manager Steve Gleghorn to demonstrate the latest products at Spennymoor’s Academy of Light. He was surprised at the result!
A branch in Chester Le Street, County Durham, was earmarked for a trail and Northern Rock had the Thorn scheme calculations – by Mike Henson – incorporated by their design consultant, who endorsed LED lighting as being more effective and efficient than fluorescent. Colour rendering was investigated and found to be ideal for the task at hand.

The lighting installed includes a mixture of Base LED650 and Cruz LED160 downlights controlled by PIR dimming, LED emergency signs, plus recessed LED E/Facts outside. Calculations showed that by using the low power, long lasting LEDs, energy usage has been reduced by 51% (1.5kW, as against 3.1kW).

Staff at Dougal & Railton, the electrical contractor, were also pleased as the lower power consumption enabled them to overcome incoming supply limitations.
